Potclays, on its own published figures

Potclays makes clay as well as selling it, and its product pages are the most transparent in this index: every bag size from 1 kg to a tonne is listed with its own price and its own per-kilogram figure, printed twice, once including VAT and once excluding it. That transparency is what makes the comparison below possible, and it is also what shows the awkward result: the same body costs less from a stockist than from the company that makes it.

What the per-kilogram figure does to the sum

The 12.5 kg bag of Draycott White Stoneware is priced at £17.71 including VAT and £14.76 excluding it, which the page itself renders as £1.42 and £1.18 per kilogram. Buy a tonne instead and the same page prints £0.47 a kilogram excluding VAT. That spread is normal on this shelf and it is the strongest argument for a studio buying with two or three other people.

The reason to read the per-kilogram column rather than the bag price is that bag sizes are not standard across this market. A price that looks like a bargain against a 12.5 kg bag may be a 10 kg bag, and a price that looks extraordinary is usually a single kilogram.

Where it sits against the stockists

Bluematchbox lists the same body under the same manufacturer code, 157-1143, at £12.00 excluding tax for the 12.5 kg bag, which is £0.96 a kilogram. Potclays' own ex-VAT figure for that bag is £1.18. The gap is about a fifth, on an identical product, and it exists because a manufacturer's retail price is set beside its trade price rather than against the retail market.

None of that makes Potclays the wrong place to buy. It carries the whole range, it is the only place some of its own bodies are available in every size, and the per-kilogram price falls sharply with quantity. It does mean that a potter buying one bag of a widely stocked body should check a stockist first.
