Choosing an earthenware supplier
Watch the firing range, not the name. Earthenware runs roughly 1080 to 1180 degrees and terracotta bodies vary within that; a body fired past its range bloats, and bloating is the single most common firing fault on this shelf.
Grogged or smooth changes the price and the job. Grog costs money and buys you a body that survives a large form; a smooth red is cheaper and better for small thrown work.
Earthenware is porous when fired, so a functional pot needs a glaze that fits the body. A glaze that fits a stoneware will craze on an earthenware.
