A raku kiln is built for speed and for being opened at temperature. It is usually a light, fibre-lined chamber that lifts off the work, fired by gas, and it reaches temperature in a fraction of the time a conventional firing takes because the work is going straight from the kiln into a reduction bin.
Why it is built differently
Conventional kilns are heavy and heavily insulated because they climb and cool slowly. A raku kiln is light and fibre-lined so it heats fast and can be lifted clear, and it does not need to hold heat afterwards because the pieces leave immediately. Many are home built from a drum and ceramic fibre, and commercial ones follow the same logic.
What the firing involves
Work goes in, the kiln climbs quickly, the glaze is watched until it melts and goes glossy, and the piece is lifted out glowing with long tongs into a bin of sawdust, paper or leaves. The bin is lidded, the contents catch and are smothered, and the reduction in that oxygen-starved bin does the rest: black bare clay, darkened crackle lines and metallic copper.
The clay has to survive it
An ordinary body shatters under that thermal shock. Raku clays are open and heavily grogged specifically so they can take it, and using the wrong body is the most common reason a first raku firing ends with broken pieces. Nothing about the kiln compensates for the clay.
Safety, which is real here
This is the process on this shelf with a genuine fire and burn risk. It happens outdoors, on a non-combustible surface, with proper tongs, gauntlets and eye protection, a clear area, lidded bins and water to hand. It also produces a great deal of smoke, so location and neighbours matter as much as equipment.
